Ben Harris created the gripping, slow-moving Nordic crime drama series “Young Wallander” for Netflix. Although it’s a loose prequel to Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander stories, the detective series is a reimagining set in the present day. The second season picks up right after the first season finale, and young Kurt remains low key after Hemberg’s devastating death. He even plays with the idea of leaving the major crimes unit, but Frida Rask makes him reconsider his choices. As the new Chief Osei takes office, a new hit-and-run case worries Frida. Wallander thinks the mystery is reasonably simple, but should he judge a book by the cover? If the final moments still torment you, let us dive into the records. FRONT SPOILERS.
Young Wallander Season 2 Recap
The series opens after Hemberg’s death, and Kurt thinks about quitting work. However, senior detective Frida Rask manages to drag him out of the cocoon for a case. What seems like a standard hit-and-run incident gets more and more complicated as the story goes deeper down the rabbit hole. With the grace of a girl named Katja, the police find her name. The deceased is a middle-aged ex-convict named Anton Nyberg. However, Anton Nyberg turns out to be an alias for Elias Fagar, a 14-year-old boy who served an eight-year prison sentence. The person who put him behind bars was Frida Rask, in her very first case.
The police find a video of the club in the front to take a closer look at the murder. It is obvious that Katja spoke to the killer before going to Elias and that she may have participated in the murder. The footage also reveals a police car, and after that Kurt knows the vehicle is a fraud. Meanwhile, someone leaks the footage to the media, which makes Reza suspect possible insider involvement. On the other hand, another video from the affair from eight years ago resurfaces in Frida’s assessment. Frida appears violent in the video when he calls a 16-year-old Soren a “monster”. However, Soren thinks Moberg deserved it and he seems pretty calm in his demeanor. The first case involves the death of lifeguard Jurgen Moberg in the school sauna.
Even though Moberg seems more than clean, a saint, closer investigation reveals an entirely different personality. Frida is tormented by the memory of the affair when Kurt suggests that the truth might be other than her previous assessment. Meanwhile, we find information about the guy with Elias at the club the night he died. This guy is Elias’ older brother, Soren Fagar, who is believed to be the main culprit in Jurgen Moberg’s death. He also spent eight years in jail and police learned he had breached his parole earlier. Although Katja tries to evade interrogation, Kurt leaves her a card. She tries to call Kurt feeling her life threatened.
Reza, who is in the Lindaangen district, assists Katja in her apartment. As they leave, judging that Katja is not at home, the killer appears soon after. Katja escapes through the balcony and heads into a narrow alley. The killer reaches him before the police can, and Kurt apparently arrived a bit too late. Although he has to explain to Osei, he spots the hooded killer in the crowd. Kurt runs after the killer, but he runs away. Meanwhile, Reza gets a promotion to replace Rask’s absence, while Soren breaks into Rask’s house unnoticed. Soren leaves Rask unharmed. After looking into the case, Reza comes up with a theory and they start investigating someone in the police station with a grudge.
End of season 2 of Young Wallander: Who killed Elias Fagar? Why?
As the story unfolds, it appears that Petterson killed Elias Fagar. Petterson is the same guy who works at the garage at the police station, and finding a fraudulent police vehicle would have been a breeze for him. Petterson also applied three times to the police academy, but never got a chance to serve. He then joined the army and served in Afghanistan for a time. After returning from Afghanistan, Petterson apparently developed PTSD, which sent him to the psychiatric hospital of Edwin Holmgren, the father of Amelia Holmgren (aka Mia).
In the clinic, where Amelia was also a patient, she and Petterson developed a friendly relationship – Amelia later overturns Petterson taking care of her. However, the relationship may have been more than friendly, as Petterson tries to protect Amelia until the very end. Detective Reza has only a hunch, and following the tip, Osei agrees to provide a wiretap for Petterson. They listen to the conversation between Petterson and Amelia, where Amelia tells him that he went too far. Elsewhere, Soren follows the trail of Elias’ yearbook love letters and finds Amelia’s identity. Kurt can’t believe his eyes when he looks at Amelia’s photo – she’s Mia, the flirtatious lawyer who works with Mona.
As we recall the evidence, we try to figure out why Petterson killed Elias. First, the service in Afghanistan made him unstable – the reason for his visit to the clinic. In this troubled time, he bonded with Amelia, and due to the circumstances, the bond was strong. Amelia told Petterson about Elias, because she was afraid that Elias would blurt out the truth. To silence Elias, Edwin Holmgren bribed a large sum of money. And Elias almost told his brother the truth — the truth about Jurgen Moberg’s death — before he died. Petterson employed Katja to lure Elias to the subway and drove Elias away. Petterson also likely released the video to come back to the police academy.
Who killed Jürgen Moberg? Why?
In the season finale, the involvement of the Holmberg family becomes more apparent. We can finally put together the pieces of a puzzle that spans eight years. The Jurgen Moberg murder case was Frida Rask’s first case. His investigation revealed that the school’s infamous brothers, Soren Fagar and Elias Fagar, had killed Moberg. Frida put them aside for eight years, but there was more to the story than she could realize. Her brother found love letters from Elias’ house, suggesting a secret between her and Elias. The letters also mentioned how Elias had helped her.
In the finale, Soren gets hold of Amelia in the church. Soren holds a knife to his throat and Amelia tells the truth. She was a victim of Jurgen’s pedophilia. Amelia wrote these letters to express her love for Elias to use her. She used to get special lessons from Jurgen, that’s also how she got the keys. While Elias didn’t do much, Soren beat Jurgen to some extent. However, it was Amelia who put Moberg in the white-hot sauna, causing his eventual death. Amelia killed Moberg in revenge, while Edwin ensured the boys were wrongfully punished by becoming their defense attorney.
