Young Wallander Season 3: Renewed or cancelled?

-

Developed by Ben Harris, the detective series “Young Wallander” is based on the famous detective imagined by the Swedish writer Henning Mankell. Although it’s a modern tale, the series imagines a much younger Wallander, almost like a prequel to the original stories. The second season follows Kurt and Frida in modern Malmo as they team up to decode two murders eight years apart. Kurt searches for connections between the two cases, but his investigation slowly spirals out of control. After its original release in September 2020, the series was recognized for its dark Nordic noir vibe and sharp aesthetic, though some fans felt the lack of period feel. The second season concludes the story well, but you can be rooted for the third season. Is the third season really possible? Let’s investigate further.

Young Wallander Season 3 Release Date

Season 2 of “Young Wallander” premiered in its entirety on February 17, 2022 on Netflix. Like the first, the second episode contains six episodes with running times between 36 and 45 minutes per episode. Now consider the prospects for a follow-up season.

The show received mostly positive reviews from fans and critics. The response was not too robust. However, the popularity of the fictional character of Kurt Wallander has not diminished even to this day. The abundance of material and the reaction from global fans may encourage the steaming platform to give young Kurt another chance. If the show is renewed for a third season by the end of 2022, we expect potential season 3 of “Young Wallander” to air in fall 2024 or later.

Cast of Young Wallander season 3: who can be in it?

Almost all of the central actors whose characters remain alive until the end of the second season can reprise their roles in the eventual follow-up season. The series features a tight-knit cast including Adam Pålsson (Kurt Wallander), Leanne Best (Frida Rask), Ellise Chappell (Mona), Yasen Atour (Reza Al-Rahman), Tomiwa Edun (Samuel Osei), and others. All or most of them will make a return in the potential third installment – if there is a third installment at all. We can also expect some new faces given the nature of the series, but it would be hard to say anything about that without an official announcement.

Young Wallander Season 3 Plot: What Is It About?

The second season picks up after the first season and Kurt is still dealing with the loss of Hemberg. Meanwhile, the police stumble upon a hit-and-run case that cost Elias Fagar his life. Although it appears to be the result of drunk driving, the death is later revealed to be a premeditated murder. Frida Rusk recognizes Elias from her first trial eight years ago. The present history delves into the past. She thought Elias and his brother killed Jurgen Moberg, their evil swimming instructor.

We later learn there may be more to the story, and Moberg’s killer happens to be Amelia Holmgren, Edwin Holmgren’s daughter and Elias’ schoolmate. In the end, Soren forces Amelia to reveal the truth by holding a knife to her throat – when Amelia accepts her role in the story, Soren gets her shut down. The police can’t keep Amelia as long as they can get Petterson to come. The case ends conclusively as detectives visit Hemberg’s grave in the finale.

The potential third season can move the story forward, trying to connect to the original stories. Since Kurt Wallander is a famous fictional character in Swedish and global popular culture, the creators might be interested in a little fan service. That being said, the possible third episode could further explore Mona and Kurt’s relationship. We know they part ways later on, and the potential third season could get us guessing. On the other hand, we’ll see if Osei and Frida Rusk revisit their old romantic stint, as the second-season finale suggests.

Osei and Kurt will likely get over their differences, and Osei will hopefully relax a bit. Let’s not forget Kurt and Reza’s friendship either. Reza expressed his anger and frustration towards Kurt throughout the second season, possibly due to an inferiority complex. Although the second season resolves the issue at the end, it doesn’t give us a possible explanation behind Reza’s panic attacks. Given the character’s popularity, the scriptwriters can spin new mysteries – and the possibilities are endless.
