Where is Convicted Conman Today? Update

As the title suggests, Netflix’s “Worst Roommate Ever” dives deep into these stories in which seemingly ordinary roommates turn out to be nothing but hustlers, criminals, and in some cases, even murderers. This anthology series therefore not only examines subjects such as infamous serial killer Dorothea Puente and murderer KC Joy, but it also delves into the likes of Youssef Khater (in “Marathon Man”). So now, if you want to know more about the latter in particular, including details of his past, crimes, sentences, and current whereabouts, we’ve got you covered.

Who is Youssef Khater?

Youssef Khater is a Danish citizen of Lebanese descent who allegedly defrauded and manipulated people for his own selfish financial benefits for years. In fact, the episode suggests he went to such extremes in his (unnecessary) pursuits that even his family “kicked him out” and cut ties with him (likely before the 2010s). He claimed to be a youth football coach, military veteran and athlete over time, but the one thing every report agrees on is that he is a dangerously charismatic individual who often uses his skills/appearance to deceive others.

After all, by the end of the 2000s, Youssef had managed to convince more than 50 people in his native country to give him thousands of dollars for a trip to a “sports city” owned by a prince in Dubai. As travel time approached, however, he made countless excuses for the delay, then finally alleged that every penny had been lost in a “fire” at his house. He was later charged with arson, embezzlement, forgery and theft, making it appear he was dishonorably discharged from the Danish Marines after ten years’ service – at age 28 – for fraud as well.

However, Youssef fled before being tried for the various schemes he concocted by posing as a Palestinian-born runner who wanted to represent his roots in ultra-marathons in South America. He actually influenced the local leaders of the Palestinian community to finance his entire trip, which is how he traveled from Denmark to Brazil and finally landed in Santiago. This is where Youssef cheated on many others, including girlfriends as well as roommates, and ended up attacking Dominic Rayner before nearly killing Callie Quinn to avoid getting caught.

Where is Youssef Khater now?

Youssef Khater had essentially buried his roommate, Callie Quinn, 23, alive in an attempt to save face – he had told his creditors he would give her a bag full of cash to pay what he owed, so his disappearance would be to get him off the hook. But luckily she survived, came back and fought for justice, even after he escaped from their shared accommodation the next morning claiming his mother was dead. He was apprehended following an undercover operation shortly thereafter, and the ensuing trial led to him being found guilty of his attempted murder.

Youssef was sentenced to just 600 days behind bars in 2012, after which he was deported to Denmark to face prosecution for the charges against him. The criminal was acquitted there on three out of five counts, leading to him spending just another short stint – three months – in prison before becoming a free man for good. It was then that he traveled to Costa Rica and allegedly committed further fraud, but no subsequent arrests followed.

Since there have been no further developments in the case, we only know that Youssef was last located in his home country of Denmark in 2018. He used the pseudonyms of Joseph Carter and Josef Maria in the past, indicating he may use them, or a new name, at this time. That said, it also means no one knows the whereabouts of the man who has even been accused of seducing “many kind, generous, intelligent women along the way.”
