With Australian director Kim Farrant behind the wheels and based on the novel by Saral Alderson, “The Weekend Away” is a gripping crime thriller that draws on gendered rhetoric – the female protagonist’s ingrained paranoia gradually unveils the madnesses of men. . College buddies Kate and Beth sign up for a weekend in Croatia. Beth hasn’t been out much after the birth of her daughter, and Kate is looking for a break from her brutal breakup with Jay. However, Beth’s life is turned upside down after Kate goes missing.
While investigating Kate’s disappearance with kind-hearted taxi driver Zain, Beth uncovers damning secrets about her husband. There are seven strange male characters in the film – Jay (Kate’s ex-husband), Rob (Beth’s husband), Sebastian (the Airbnb owner), Zain (the Syrian immigrant taxi driver), Pavic (the policeman), Mateo and Luca. Among them, Zain is the only person who stands out in the eyes of the viewer – which may be a deliberate stance by the director. You might be wondering if Zain and Beth end up together in the film’s finale, and if so, let us tell you what we think. FRONT SPOILERS.
Do Beth and Zain end up together?
Zain is a Syrian refugee who arrives in Croatia, fleeing the war in his country. In Croatia, he takes the job of a taxi driver. He’s the one who takes Beth to the Airbnb from the airport. Beth attempts to pay him the fare, but he honestly says he was taken care of. Apparently Kate’s ex-husband Jay arranged everything for the trip, but Beth still tips Zain generously. Later that night, Zain takes them to dinner and then to the nightclub. She worked at the Global Rescue Initiative, so she knows a little Arabic.
The conversation between Beth and Zain shows an early spark. Following Kate’s disappearance, Beth shows up at the nightclub looking for her. She doesn’t speak much Croatian, but Zain helps her by threatening the bartender. The bartender talks about the two male escorts, Mateo and Luca, whom Kate hired the night she disappeared. The two guys often hang out at the club, and the bartender sees them with different women every night, mostly tourists.
Zain makes a date with them, asking for favor, but the guys run off at the sight of Beth. However, Zain pursues them, consequently recovering Kate’s purse and phone from a pawn shop. The police confront Beth after learning that Kate was having an affair with Rob, Beth’s husband. They tell Beth that Zain is with an Albanian gang – however, Zain later comes back to Beth. He saved a boy and the boy’s father, an Albanian mobster, arranged for his passport. Zain comes across as an honest individual, unlike most of the other men in the story.
Although apparently a taxi driver, Zain was also trained as a nurse in his home country. After the death of his wife, Mina, Zain must be looking for a meaningful relationship. On the other hand, after knowing Rob’s secrets, Beth also needs someone to fall back on. In the end, just before returning home to London and finding the piece of black onyx that completes the puzzle, Beth receives a text message from Zain. The latter tells the former that he will see her soon. With the text, we think they could end up together.
