Directed, co-written and co-produced by Roland Emmerich, ‘Moonfall’ is a sci-fi movie that revolves around a ragtag crew of people who must land on the surface of the moon, which hurtles towards planet Earth. As a mysterious force knocks the moon out of its orbit, all hopes rest on this team to prevent a massive catastrophe. However, it doesn’t take long for them to realize that Earth’s satellite is not what people thought it was.
Starring Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Kelly Yu, and Donald Sutherland, among others, the disaster drama takes place on Earth, the Moon, and everywhere in between. A significant part of the film depicts the large-scale destruction of our planet and space travel. Naturally, you must be eager to know where this movie was shot. Well, we have the details here!
Moonfall Filming Locations
“Moonfall” was filmed in Canada and the United States, mainly in Montreal, Mascouche and Los Angeles. The film should have started filming in the spring of 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in the production process. Later, in October 2020, it was reported that cameras had started rolling for the sci-fi disaster drama. Apparently principal photography ended about three months later. Now allow us to take you through all the locations that bring the film to life.
Montreal Canada
Montreal, in the province of Quebec, is a major production site for the film. Being a sci-fi drama, much of it was shot with special effects. Thus, MTL Grandé Studios in Pointe-Saint-Charles provided the necessary facilities. Located at 1862 rue Le Ber, Montreal, the studio offers five fully customizable stages with adjoining workshops and offices.

Most of the space travel and disaster footage was filmed using studio green and blue screens. The team worked closely with NASA to make sure things looked as authentic as possible. In fact, an astronaut was present on set while the NASA and space-related scenes were being worked on. Montreal residents might even recognize a few places in and around the city that feature in the film.
Mascouche, Quebec
Mascouche is another important location in Quebec that serves as the production site for this film. The city is an off-island suburb of Montreal. Some pivotal outdoor sequences were shot on land located near Highway 640. An open-air set was built in the CentrOparc sector, which was formerly the Mascouche airport. Some reports indicated that a house had been built on the spot for the shooting. Additionally, LAPD cars and vans were also spotted on set.
Los Angeles, California
It looks like a few on-location shots were shot in Los Angeles. You can see the Griffith Observatory in one of the shots. The City of Angels is a popular production site, given the well-equipped studio facilities, diverse natural landscapes, and highly skilled film crews. It’s no wonder that a large number of people in the entertainment industry call the city home. Some of the landmarks frequently seen in movies and TV shows are the Vista Theater, the Herald Examiner Building, and Union Station.
