Does Jules have borderline disorder?

Jules is a transgender teenager who experienced intense emotional turmoil at a young age. However, before we can understand how Jules’ past and present might hint at the possibility that she is showing signs of borderline personality disorder, let’s first understand what borderline personality disorder is. Borderline personality disorder is a mental disorder also known as emotional dysregulation disorder. Its main characteristics are unstable moods, behaviors and relationships.

Although considerable research has been done on borderline personality disorder, there is no known definitive cause for it. It is mainly diagnosed by symptoms such as feelings of emotional instability, worthlessness, insecurity, or impulsive behavior. The health of a person’s social relationships or lack thereof could also contribute to borderline personality disorder. Borderline personality disorder should not be confused with bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, which has slightly different characteristics. Jules’ girlfriend, Rue, is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in the series.

Jules began his transition at a young age and his relationship with his alcoholic mother left him with psychological issues. Jules’ mother attempted to admit him to a psychiatric hospital, which in itself is cause for concern given Jules’ mental health. In the present, Jules tends to have potentially threatening sexual encounters with men, but this can be seen as an exploration of her femininity and sexuality rather than a potential symptom of borderline personality disorder. However, Jules’ relationship with his mother and Rue is very tumultuous, suggesting signs of borderline personality disorder. Additionally, Jules often takes action when things between her and Rue aren’t going well.

So far on the show, Jules has portrayed an obvious impulsive nature when she abruptly leaves town to visit her friend from her old school; insecurity about his relationship with Rue; strong emotional reactions to incidents, all of which are signs of someone with borderline personality disorder. Another factor to consider is Jules’ tendency to self-harm, which is common in people with BPD.

On the other hand, Jules also frequently exhibits rational demeanor and does not seem depressed. She has a strong relationship with her father and has yet to show signs of fear of abandonment. Likewise, she is also very in tune with reality and has no history of substance abuse, unlike people with borderline personality disorder. Ultimately, while Jules shows some signs of borderline personality disorder, it’s hard to tell if they’re symptomatic. Moreover, the diagnosis of these mental disorders relies on many factors and is best done by medical experts. Therefore, unless the show’s creators or any medical professional on the show claims that Jules has BPD, it’s safe to assume otherwise.
