The eleventh season of AMC’s post-apocalyptic series “The Walking Dead” depicts Ezekiel’s arrival in the Commonwealth along with Eugene, Princess, and Yumiko. After the loss of the Kingdom and his divorce from Carol, Ezekiel faces harshly the brutality of life. As a new chapter in her life unfolds in the Commonwealth, her thyroid cancer begins to worsen.
When Carol realizes that Ezekiel’s life is hanging by a thread, she begins to do whatever she can to make sure her ex-husband will be taken care of. However, the severity of Ezekiel’s illness began to worry the character’s avid admirers, which made Khary Payton’s potential departure from the show curious. Will Ezekiel die?
In season 10, Ezekiel realizes he is suffering from thyroid cancer like his grandmother and father suffered before the apocalypse. Rather than reveal it to anyone, Ezekiel decides to keep it a secret. Later in the tenth season, Ezekiel reveals to Siddiq that he is suffering from potentially terminal cancer and may not survive due to the lack of medical facilities after the apocalypse. Yet his arrival in the Commonwealth and the presence of medical facilities gives him a glimmer of hope. However, in the tenth episode of season 11, Carol discovers that the chances of having surgery to save Ezekiel are slim due to the long waiting list.
To save Ezekiel, Carol offers her cooperation and assistance to Lance Hornsby, the Deputy Governor of the Commonwealth, in exchange for Ezekiel’s operation. Since Lance accepts Carol’s proposal, Ezekiel’s fate is in Lance’s hands and how successful Carol is in completing Lance’s missions. If Carol manages to help Lance build his reputation and authority in the Commonwealth, the Deputy Governor could use his influence to arrange the surgery Ezekiel needs, which will help him recover from cancer. Since Lance is already directing Carol to her second task, the result may show the chances of Ezekiel defeating his cancer.
Given the disapproval that Lance suffers from Pamela or the general public, an unexpected ally like Carol can prove invaluable in changing the Deputy Governor’s image. If the surgery and Ezekiel’s life are the prizes for Carol’s assistance, he could very well comply with her request and offer Ezekiel a second chance to live with the surgery.
Is Khary Payton Leaving The Walking Dead?
The first episode of the show’s eleventh and final season depicts the severity of Ezekiel’s disease. During Mercer’s interrogation, the former militia co-leader struggles hard to catch his breath. While cancer sends him signals, fans of “The King” are indeed worried about the commitment of Khary Payton in the series and the fate of Ezekiel. However, there is no official announcement from AMC or Payton regarding Ezekiel’s supposed departure. Since Carol is doing her best to keep her ex-husband alive, Ezekiel might survive the threatening illness.
Payton’s Ezekiel outlasted his comic book counterpart due to the prominence the character possesses in the series’ narrative. While Carol’s story with Lance should progress, Ezekiel could stay away from death, potentially securing Payton’s commitment to the show. Even though the show is infamous for killing off characters in unexpected ways, Ezekiel might end up triumphing over his battle with cancer thanks to Carol’s efforts and Lance’s influence. As the series slowly heads towards its finale, Ezekiel may continue to appear to bolster the narrative for the rest of the series episodes. Given the likelihood of these possibilities, we think Khary Payton should continue to appear in “The Walking Dead.”
