Will the Madame Web movie starring The Lost Daughter’s Dakota Johnson and Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney makes its way to the streaming service Netflix for subscribers to enjoy? Keep reading to find out everything fans need to know about this and more!
There is no denying that Spider-Man: No Way Home has caused fans everywhere to obsess over everything related to the friendly neighborhood webhead. This has inevitably caused a heightened interest in a number of upcoming titles, including the intriguing Madame Web feature in the works.
In September 2019, it was revealed that Sony was developing a solo film based on the mysterious woman with psychic sensory powers. Later, on Feb. 3, 2022, it was announced that Johnson would play the titular character, with news coming on March 16 that Sweeney would be co-starring in the Sony feature.
Director S.J. Clarkson will be at the helm for the Marvel flick, who is known for her work on The Defenders, Jessica Jones, Collateral, Succession, and the upcoming Anatomy of a Scandal series. It will be rousing to see what Madame Web will have in store for fans, but will it ever be headed to Netflix for subscribers to enjoy?
Who is Madame Web?
First off, before moving forward, for those that aren’t familiar with the character, Madame Web is a clairvoyant and precognitive mutant that is able to travel through the multiverse from Marvel comics. She is primarily featured in stories relating to Spider-Man, and she made her debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 in November 1980, created by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Ramita Jr.
The character has made other appearances in video games as well as TV shows, including being a prominent figure in the legendary Spider-Man: The Animated Series from the ’90s voiced by Joan Lee. In addition, the Julia Carpenter version of the character was seen as an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the cartoon series Ultimate Spider-Man. The upcoming Madame Web movie will mark the character’s first big-screen appearance, and it is unknown what source material, if any, will be the inspiration for the narrative.
Is the Madame Web movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
No, the Madame Web movie exists in the Sony shared universe of Marvel films focusing primarily on the villains of the wallcrawler. So far, these films include the already released Venom and Venom: Let There be Carnage and the upcoming Morbius film starring Jared Leto and the Kraven the Hunter flick starring Aaron Taylor Johnson.
But after what went down in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it is definitely possible for different worlds or franchises to collide, and Sony has hinted heavily toward this happening at some point in the future. Given what Madame Web is known for in the comics, it would seem sensible for one to speculate that she may be a big factor in making those realities cross paths down the road.
Is Netflix getting Madame Web starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney?
Variety reported in April 2021 that a deal between Sony and Netflix had been made, which would see the U.S. exclusive streaming rights go to the latter in the first pay-TV window, beginning with the studio’s 2022 roster of titles. The agreement is stated to run for about five years and is estimated to be worth hundreds of million dollars for the studio over that period of time.
What this means is that films like Uncharted starring Tom Holland and Morbius starring Leto will be available on the streaming service at some point after their theatrical run. While nothing has been officially confirmed, there is a solid chance that Madame Web will also eventually make its way to Netflix.
