Elaine Campione’s two young daughters, Sophia and Serena, were found dead in their apartment in a double homicide. Explore Discovery’s’Signs Of A Psychopath: Sleeping Beauties’ delves into Elaine’s aftermath interrogation and what eventually happened to her. So, if you’re curious to know where she is today, we’ve got you covered.
Who is Elaine Campione?
According to Elaine’s mother, Faye Goodine, Elaine had a relatively normal life growing up. After school, community college and a series of jobs, she moved to Toronto, Canada, for a job as a nanny. She met Leo in 2000, and the two married and eventually had two daughters. However, at the time of the incident, they were divorcing and engaged in a controversial custody battle for Sophia (19 months old) and Serena (three years old).
Elaine had left Leo for allegedly being abusive. He was charged with assaulting Elaine and their oldest daughter, Serena, and later moved out of the apartment in Barrie, Ontario. On October 4, 2006, Elaine called authorities to report the death of her daughters. When the police arrived, they found Serena and Sophia in Elaine’s bed, clasping hands. It was later revealed that the girls had drowned and then dressed in pajamas and jewelry. Serena and Sophia were put under the covers and had hugs around them, their interlocking hands wrapped in a rosary.
Elaine was quickly arrested and the evidence seemed to pile up against her. The prosecution alleged that Elaine drowned her daughters in the family bathtub and then posed them in bed. They believed she wanted revenge on Leo and didn’t want him to take custody of the children. A scheduled custody hearing was set to take place on October 5, the day after the bodies were found.
Furthermore, home videos showed a recording from October 2, 2006 around 8:39 pm, where the children were playing. Then, at about 9:27 p.m., Elaine was seen alone and said, ‘Leo, there, are you happy? Everything is gone… The idea that you could have my children – God believes me, and God cares for them now.’ According to the show, she admitted to taking several of her anti-anxiety pills around the same time to kill herself. But when that failed, she called authorities to say that Serena and Sophia were dead.

Elaine pleaded innocent, saying she was not criminally responsible. The defense argued that she was dealing with serious mental illness. Elaine had previously been admitted to psychiatric wards, had attempted suicide and was delusional. She believed that someone was out to kill her and steal her daughters. Elaine had also claimed to see aliens in the past. However, the prosecution claimed that Elaine knew what she was doing at the time, despite her mental health issues.
Ultimately, in November 2010, a jury found her guilty of two first-degree murders. Elaine, then 35 years old, was sentenced to life in prison with the option of parole after 25 years. As of 2015, she was placed in a minimum security correctional facility in Ontario. In 2019, Elaine was granted a temporary leave from prison to attend church rehabilitation and mental health programs. The probation commission decided this after learning that she had obtained a business degree and participated in voluntary workshops. They believed that Elaine showed personal growth.
