Shawn Levy of the acclaimed “Night at the Museum” franchise elevated the action-adventure film “Free Guy.” With Ryan Reynolds leading the ensemble cast, the film offers heart-pounding romance and wall-to-wall action to entice genre fans. The story follows Guy, an inhabitant of the violent world of Free City, on his quest to find the girl of his dreams. However, Guy is unaware that his life may have been a lie. The film takes fans on the sprawling journey with a bonkers premise where “The Truman Show” meets “They Live.” However, you may have wondered where this Free City is. Also, is Soonami Studios part of Free City? Let us find out! FRONT SPOILERS.
Where is the free city?
The film takes us to the wonderland of Free City, which looks quite dark at second glance. Free City is a place where stores and banks are robbed every day, and people die over and over again, on repeat. The townspeople are Guy, the story’s hero, his security guard friend Buddy, a woman whose catchphrase is “You’re so sexy” and a barista who can’t do anything but an average coffee with cream and two sugars.
Our Guy is a typical blue collar guy who only has blue shirts in his wardrobe. He works in a bank where every day is “Today”. Thieves loot the bank at regular intervals. You’ve been wondering where the town is since the start of the movie, though you may get an answer later in the story. It turns out that Free City does not exist in the real world. It is a virtual city and the main setting for an open-world game. So Soonami Studios CEO Antwan can change the city as he pleases since he is the creator of the game. However, he is not the real creator – because his employee Keys wrote the game code with his interest romantic, Millie.
Where is Soonami Studios? Is it in Free City?
Besides the virtual world of Free City, parts of the film take place at Soonami Studios. You have to wonder if the studio is in town. It can get a bit confusing, but the city is instead in the studio – or primarily, in a server room in the studio. Soonami Studios has released the game “Free City”, tweaking the original code for “Life Itself”, which Millie and Keys created together. The game went viral, but Keys and Millie didn’t get their credit. So, in the current timeline, Millie struggles to find the game’s source code or anything that would help her win the case against Soonami Studios.
With Guy’s help, Millie succeeds in her quest. When Antwan kicks Millie out of the game, restarting player progression, Guy returns to his regular life. However, Guy’s memory returns when Millie kisses him, and he remembers everything from their past encounter. With the new found spirit, he single-handedly retrieves video from epic level player Revenjamin Buttons’ hideout. Guy saw the lost world image of ‘Life Itself’ in the reflection of his window – and Millie deduces that they can reach the source code if Guy crosses the horizon. Keys builds a bridge for Guy to make the trip. Antwan heads to the server room to destroy the city when all else fails. He nearly destroys the room, but AI Guy still manages to break through to the other side.
