Weekend Plot Synopsis
Best friends Beth and Kate meet in Croatia as they start their weekend together. Kate asks Beth about her troubled marriage to Rob when the former learns Beth’s sex life hasn’t been active in a year. Due to Kate’s insistence, Beth and Kate go to a disco bar, hang out with two handsome men, and invite them over to their house. Beth wakes up the next morning with a vague memory of last night and realizes that Kate is missing. She calls Zain, a Syrian taxi driver, to help him locate Kate.
Beth and Zain locate Mateo and Luka, the two escorts who accompanied Beth and Kate, believing they are involved in Kate’s disappearance. However, one of them admits not. Beth goes to the police to file a missing person complaint. Meanwhile, Rob arrives in Croatia to help Beth. They are soon informed that Kate is dead. The police confirm that it is a murder. Beth opens Kate’s phone and reads the text messages between Kate and Rob. She realizes that Rob had an affair with Kate. The police get the information on Sebastian’s case and arrest Beth, suspected of Kate’s murder.
Due to lack of evidence, Beth is released from police custody. Back in her room, she finds that Sebastian has placed a hidden camera in every room. She sneaks into her computer room and watches the videos from the day Kate disappeared. Beth realizes that Mateo and Luka are just thieves but notices a taxi car Kate rented that night. She meets Zain to speak to the taxi driver, who informs them that he dropped Kate off at the police station.
End of the weekend: who killed Kate? Why?
When Beth realizes that Kate’s complaint was not registered at the police station, just like her original missing person complaint, she begins to suspect Pavic of being the killer. Beth confirms her suspicions by seeing Pavic’s car license plate, which matches the plate she saw in Sebastian’s video. As Kovac and Pavic pursue Beth and Zain to arrest them, Zain convinces Kovac that Pavic is involved in the murder and just as Kovac could intervene, Pavic trips over a rock and falls to his death. Pavic’s past bad behavior towards women and CCTV footage that shows a man punching Kate, causing her to fall into the water and drown, lead Kovac to close the case assuming Pavic is the killer.
Meanwhile, Beth returns to London and begins to live separately from Rob. One day, while leaving Aster with her father, Beth finds a pearl from the necklace she gave Kate in Rob’s jacket pocket. She realizes that the killer is not Pavic but Rob. When Beth travels to Croatia to spend time with Kate, Rob fears the worst. He is afraid to think that Kate will reveal her affair to Beth. When Kate returns from the police station, having rejected Pavic’s advances, she meets Rob. He repeatedly asks her if she ever told Beth about their affair. When he realizes that’s not the case, Rob asks him not to destroy his friend’s life by revealing anything about them.
Rob and Kate’s argument leads to a fight when Kate tells him she’s going to tell the truth from now on, angering the former. Rob punches Kate and the latter stumbles to fall on the stones, hitting her head. Kate rolls in the waters and drowns, which ends up killing her. Even though Rob has no intention of killing Kate, his actions lead to her death. Thinking Kate is dead, Rob leaves the waterfront. However, Kate was alive when she fell in the water and she died of complications from drowning. Rob’s misunderstanding that Kate died from banging her head prevents him from saving her from drowning.
Did Kate love Rob?
No, Kate didn’t like Rob. When Rob realizes that Beth knows he was behind Kate’s death, he begins to confess. As he tries to pick up the pieces with Beth, he realizes he can’t tell the truth. So he creates a lie – Kate forced him to leave Beth and the fight ensued when he made it clear to Kate that he couldn’t leave his wife. However, Rob is the one who wanted to end his marriage to Beth to live with Kate. The night Kate died, she perfectly explains to Rob that everything that happened between them was just a rebound and the biggest mistake of her life.
Kate’s insistence that he means nothing to her hurts Rob. He is afraid of losing Kate and Beth and tells her not to reveal anything to Beth so that her marriage will remain intact even if she does not want it. Rather than tell the truth, Rob tries to trick Beth by lying that Kate wanted him and that he resisted her for Beth’s sake. Even though Rob tries to establish his lie, Beth realizes that he can no longer be trusted and walks away from him as the police approach to arrest him.
Do Beth and Zain end up together?
When Kate goes missing, Zain lends support to a vulnerable Beth. He becomes her companion to discover the truth about Kate’s disappearance. When Beth learns that Kate has died and her husband had an affair with her best friend, she becomes upset. Even then, Zain stands by her side to help her. He risks his own life and livelihood to get Beth to find Kate’s killer. More than anything, Zain asks her to follow her heart and her instincts rather than anything. When the police close the Kate case, Beth leaves Croatia but not Zain’s life.
Just before leaving Aster with Rob, Beth receives a text from Zain informing her that he will be seeing her soon, indicating the possibility that they are giving each other a chance. Zain’s text lights up Beth’s face as his presence and company do in her life. As she finally ends her relationship with Rob, Beth comes to a crossroads for her life to come and she may have chosen the road that leads her to Zain. Her compassion and dependability might help her get through the painful end of her relationship with Rob. Their compatibility may lead them to enjoy an admirable relationship together as Beth enters a new phase in her life.
